What is that SMELL?! Well, if you are seeing a brownish/reddish bug that is about an inch long… then it could be a Stink Bug! These bugs are an invasive species from Asia and found in Allentown, PA in the mid-1990’s. They are spade shaped with a brownish/reddish back with a cream-colored underbelly along with white bands on their antennae. The stink bug is invasive because it is not native to the North American ecosystem and can destroy your garden. Stink bugs will leave brown necrotic spots on your crops and stunt the growth of fruit. There is no direct harm to humans, but they will invade your house and come out of the walls and stink up the place come springtime, when they come out of hiding.
There are ways to prevent them from invading your house. The best thing to do is get out your caulk gun! You should caulk windows and any cracks that we can squeeze through. The next step is to make sure you have proper screens covering your attic and crawl spaces, preventing them from crawling into your house and hiding!
Stink bugs do not do damage to your house, but they are annoying if they are in your house already! You don’t want to move or smash it because of the smell but how to do you get them to go away?! Stink bugs are susceptible to many types of pesticides used by professionals.
We recommend our exterior power spray program to protect your house and garden. Power spraying protects your house from the invasion of this invasive species. Our power spraying program is a Spring, Summer and Fall application that will prevent Stink bugs and other invasive pest.
